Our New Tuscan Leather

Category: Travel Journal

A few months ago, I found myself in Ponte a Egola, Italy sitting at a table across from one of the leather industry’s “best kept secrets.”

Manuel, was his name. And for the past 50 years, his family has been making some of the highest quality vegetable tanned leather I’ve ever seen.

You might already know, Satchel & Page is a leather company at heart. It’s what drives our business. And we’re always searching for the best quality leather to use for our bags.

While other companies are content with using low-cost, chrome tanned leather that is horrible for the environment… has a weird smell to it… and sports a cheap aesthetic… we are dedicated to providing you with the richest and most natural leather we can get our hands on - even if it means we have to pay more on our end.

When I heard about the quality of leather that this 3rd generation family business was producing, I knew I had to learn more.

For the past year, my team and I had been on a search to find the perfect partner to help take our products to the next level. During our journey, we poured over countless samples from tanneries all around the world. But eventually, we met Manuel in Tuscany, Italy, the birthplace of vegetable tanned leather.

As soon as we saw his first sample, we knew we had to partner with his company. Now, it’s pretty rare that a tannery actually makes better production quality than samples, so as soon as we saw the production hides they made for us last month…that’s when we knew we had something really special.

And that’s why I’m proud to announce our new partnership with Manuel’s tannery.
They’ll be making every piece of leather we use in the future.

They are one of the founding members of The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium: a group of Tuscan vegetable tanneries who follow strict quality standards and regulations. Our leather will now be labeled with the official Quality Trademark certified by the Consortium.

Our new Tuscan leather is natural, transparent, and rich in oils. It’s a naked, pure leather. One that will patina quickly and beautifully. If you’re a leather ‘purist’, you will love it.

And to continue the good vibes, our bags made with this leather will be available in only 10 days, as we update our photos and website.
